Independence Day, the main public holiday in the United States, was proclaimed in honor of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence back in 1776. On July 4 of that year, representatives of 13 U.S. states signed a document in Philadelphia, which declared the states an independent state, independent from the British kingdom.
