How is the granite we supply?
Granite as well as other types of natural stone is mined in an open manner in large quarries using special equipment.
There are several ways to extract stone:
- By blasting stone strata
- Stone cutting machines
- Pneumatic chipping of stone
The type most commonly used is the stone-cutting type, in which large blocks of stone are sawn off from the total mass of rock using wire saws. The stone blocks that are sawn off are divided into categories; only the biggest and best quality blocks are used to make slabs. After the blocks are sawn off, they undergo primary processing to obtain a block of the required size ready for further processing by sawing into slabs. After processing, granite block is delivered to the factory for sawing stone into thin peculiar "sheets" of stone called slabs, the typical thickness of slab from 20 to 30 millimeters.
In some cases, the block is sawn into slabs not all the way to the end, forming so-called bundles of stone - a set of slabs united on a single base, this is done for ease of transportation when the stone requires a firm hold during transportation. Branching slabs require additional sawing and polishing, while completely finished individual slabs are completely ready for production (for example, countertops) and have a marketable look: polished, sawn at the edges to the required size.
